A Moment of Honesty Before We Talk About Metabolism
There’s a part of this story that matters more than any workout plan or metabolism conversation, and it feels important to start there.
The week I took my very first GLP-1 shot happened to be the same week my grandma came home on hospice.
My mom needed help caring for her, so I spent those days moving back and forth between my house and theirs. I helped with meals. I helped with medications. I sat beside her bed. I helped my mom navigate those final days of loving someone through the end of their life.
Grief has a way of rearranging everything.
For the first three weeks that I was on this medication, I wasn’t thinking about metabolism or strength training or optimizing anything. I was grieving. I was exhausted. I was emotionally raw in a way that only loss can create.
The only real movement I was getting during those weeks came from everyday life. I was doing chores around my house and my grandpa’s house, cooking meals, helping with errands, and moving through the rhythm of being a mom with busy kids.
There were no perfect workouts happening. There was just life.
The relief I got knowing that this season in time was not negatively affecting my GLP-1 journey was monumental, and I got that peace of mind with my smart fitness scale. Knowing the data gave me permission to move through my grief on my own timeline.

We’ve been told that it’s fragile. That one wrong move can “break” it. That eating too little will destroy it forever, or that losing weight will automatically slow everything down permanently.
So when women start a GLP-1, and the scale begins to move, a very common fear shows up quietly in the background.
“Am I ruining my metabolism?”
I understand why that question appears.
Many of us lived through years of crash dieting, extreme workout programs, metabolic damage conversations, and endless advice about cortisol and starvation mode. When you’ve spent that long being told your body is fragile, it’s easy to assume any change might cause harm.
But the more I’ve learned about physiology, the more I’ve realized something important.
Metabolism isn’t fragile.
Metabolism is responsive.
Your body constantly adjusts to the signals you send it.
Food is a signal. Movement is a signal. Stress is a signal. Sleep is a signal. Hormones are signals.
Your metabolism is simply responding to the environment you create.
What GLP-1 Actually Changes
GLP-1 medications primarily influence appetite signaling and insulin regulation. They help stabilize blood sugar and reduce the constant hunger signals many people experience when insulin resistance or hormonal imbalance is present.
What they do not do is control how you move your body or how you nourish it.
Those signals are still yours to guide.
For me, that realization shifted the way I think about metabolism entirely. Instead of asking, “How do I push my body harder?” I started asking a different question.
“What signals is my body responding to right now?”

The Rhythm I’ve Started Noticing
Because GLP-1 is taken weekly, I’ve started noticing that my energy naturally shifts throughout the week.
Two days before my next injection, I feel stronger and more energized. My workouts feel easier, my endurance feels higher, and my body seems more capable of handling heavier movement.
The day I take my shot, and sometimes the day after, my energy feels softer. It’s as if my body wants gentler movement instead of intensity.
For years, I would have ignored those signals and pushed through them because that’s what fitness culture teaches us to do. Consistency is often framed as doing the same thing every day, no matter what.
But I’m starting to see consistency differently.
Consistency doesn’t have to mean forcing the same workout regardless of how your body feels.
Sometimes consistency simply means continuing to move while adjusting the intensity to match your energy.
What Movement Looks Like For Me Right Now
When my energy is higher and my body feels strong, I enjoy incorporating weighted workouts. These are the days when lifting feels good and my body responds well to resistance.
On days when I want something that still challenges my muscles but feels a little less intense, I go for weighted vest walks. Walking has always been one of my favorite forms of movement, and the vest adds just enough resistance to make the walk feel purposeful without overwhelming my system.
There are also days when my body clearly asks for something lighter. On those days, I turn to yoga, stretching, or slower movement that allows my nervous system to settle.
And sometimes the most supportive thing I can do is simply take a regular walk without a vest, letting fresh air and gentle movement do their quiet work.
None of these choices are about burning the most calories or forcing a particular outcome. They are simply ways of responding to what my body seems ready for that day.
Learning to Listen Instead of Overriding
For a long time, I believed discipline meant overriding my body’s signals and just pushing through to get in my workout.
If I was tired, I pushed harder. If I was sore, I ignored it. If I felt depleted, I assumed that meant the workout was working.
But the more I learn about metabolism and hormonal health, the more I see that our bodies are constantly communicating with us.
Energy levels are signals. Recovery is a signal. Strength fluctuations are signals.
Metabolism doesn’t respond well to constant stress and exhaustion. It responds best when the body feels supported and safe.
That doesn’t mean avoiding effort. It simply means choosing effort that aligns with your body’s capacity instead of fighting against it.
The Real Goal of This Season
This season of my life isn’t about proving how disciplined I can be.
It’s about building a relationship with my body that feels sustainable.
If I move most days, nourish my body well, and stay consistent over time, I know my metabolism will respond accordingly.
What I’m learning through this process is that metabolism isn’t something we need to micromanage with fear.
It’s something we influence with signals.
And when those signals include nourishment, movement, recovery, and patience, the body usually knows exactly what to do.
